\"Robert Pinsky belongs to that rarest category of talents, a poet-critic.\"--Robert Lowell

Two important books of criticism by the Pulitzer Prize finalist and former U.S. poet laureate--now combined in a single volume with a new preface by the author

For Robert Pinsky, poetry's individual, human scale as a fundamentally vocal medium--with poems brought to life by one person at a time--gives poetry a unique importance in American and democratic culture and society. This book brings together two compelling works of criticism by the former poet laureate--The Situation of Poetry and Democracy, Culture and the Voice of Poetry, in which he makes a passionate and eloquent case for the vital role of poetry in a democracy.

We each begin with a simple note, but as life progresses, we're led to the next note, and the next - all of which combine to form the melody of a song and the cadence of a life. As life becomes more complicated and complex, we find that loss, grief, and heartache can muffle our music, making the world go silent. But as Whitney's poems show, all of these rests and pauses in the music are part of the magnificent composition of life.Broken into four sections - melody, rest, crescendo, and harmony - the poems in Harmony explore childhood, friendship, grief, acceptance, and peace. \"Gafori's translation is exceptional: contemporary, razor-sharp, and lyrically expansive but still unmistakably Rumi . . . an accessible, enjoyable, and essential entry point to Rumi's work.\" -Publishers Weekly, starred review

Water expands on Gold, Haleh Liza Gafori's inspired and widely praised translation of the lyric poetry of the Persian mystic Rumi. As in Gold, Gafori renders with fluid grace and moving immediacy these indisputable masterworks of world literature, drawing on the deep well of Rumi's work to bring out the worldly wit and wisdom that accompany his otherworldly summons. Behold the divine within and without, he tells us. Question the gnawing hunger for material possessions, fame, and fortune, and the fear of emptiness that drives it. Muster the soul, and experience a more compassionate and liberated state of mind. An eco-poet before his time, Rumi celebrates the immensity and wonder of the natural world while warning us of the havoc that greed and the pursuit of power wreak upon us and our world. His flights of dazzling imagery open up heart-stopping glimpses of the divine, challenging readers to wake from oblivion, and above all, to surrender to the transformative power of Love.

Gafori is an acclaimed vocalist and musician as well as a gifted linguist and poet, and in her translations Rumi's poetry sings and beckons as nowhere else. Hers is the work, as the poet Marilyn Hacker has said, \"of someone who is at once an acute and enamored reader of the original Farsi text, a dedicated miner of context and backstory, and, best of all, a marvelous poet in English.\"",{"_798":958,"_800":1210,"_777":1211},"audience","Trade",{"_798":958,"_800":968,"_777":1213},"New York Review of Books, Incorporated, The",{"_798":958,"_800":805,"_777":971},{"_798":958,"_800":973,"_777":974},{"_798":958,"_800":979,"_777":1217},"LINGUISTICS",{"_798":958,"_800":982,"_777":1219},"2025-05-27",{"_798":958,"_800":985,"_777":1221},"104",{"_798":814,"_800":731,"_777":988},{"_798":814,"_800":990,"_777":818},{"_798":814,"_800":820,"_777":992},{"_798":814,"_800":994,"_777":1226},"10/08/2026",{"_798":814,"_800":997,"_777":1228},"42.0",{"_798":814,"_800":1000,"_777":828},{"_798":830,"_800":831,"_777":832},{"_798":830,"_800":731,"_777":832},{"_798":830,"_800":835,"_777":747},{"_798":830,"_800":1008,"_777":747},{"_798":830,"_800":839,"_777":747},{"_798":830,"_800":1013,"_777":747},{"_798":830,"_800":843,"_777":844},{"_798":830,"_800":1018,"_777":844},{"_798":830,"_800":848,"_777":844},{"_798":830,"_800":1023,"_777":844},{"_798":830,"_800":850,"_777":851},{"_798":830,"_800":1028,"_777":851},{"_762":1243},[1244],{"_765":116,"_766":-5,"_130":1245,"_209":1246,"_768":1250,"_774":1251,"_17":1190,"_778":1253,"_780":1254},"gid://shopify/ProductVariant/50571708268741",{"_1034":1247,"_1036":1037,"_130":1248,"_35":1193,"_1039":1249},"Water Cover Image","gid://shopify/ProductImage/44244139245765",1280,{"_770":771,"_772":1228},[1252],{"_751":752,"_777":1190},"9781681379166",{"_782":1255},[1256],{"_785":1257},{"_787":116,"_133":1258},{"_751":729},"relatedProductsCollectionUrl","/collections/shop-all?shopify_products%5BrefinementList%5D%5Bmeta.categories.sub_merged%5D%5B0%5D=POETRY","relatedProductsFirstSubCategory","city","columbus","actionData","errors"]
